Orienteering

Exercise your mind and body as you navigate between control points using your orienteering map, working out the best route as you go along. With the help of your instructor you will learn how to read a map and find your way around the course. Runners, joggers and walkers can all enjoy orienteering so there are a few options on how you can approach this activity, depending on how energetic you feel.

You could go for a timed run or enjoy your new skills at a more leisurely pace and walk around our wonderful grounds. This activity requires a bit more concentration (and a torch!) during the evening or night time.

Mixed bag

Miscellaneous teamwork exercises with a view to working together, developing trust and forward planning. Tasks will change depending on the leader and the weather!

Night hike

Just what it says on the tin: a nightime hike, torches, muddy wellies, no clue about where you’re going, lots of hushed whispers and at Castle Toward the possibility of visiting the ‘ole ruin of Toward Castle’ where the massacre of the Lamonts took place, to say nothing of the visit by Mary, Queen of Scots and her pet duck. (Quack!) But more of that when you get here.

Search and rescue

Using grid references and learning techniques used by Mountain Rescue; a scaled down rescue mission takes place. It’s all done to scale, even our ‘casualty’ is an Action Man toy dressed on this occasion as an eagle eyed outdoor adventurer. Will the group be able to track him down? Will he escape the perils of plastic frostbite? Will the team bring him safely home? Only your team know the answers.

Wide game

A runaround game usually played in the evening on the front lawn or in the wooded areas close to the centres, there are a number of variations on the Wide Game including ‘capture the flag’. This involves participants being split into two groups, each with a flag. Using stealth, camouflage and tactics they capture their opposing team’s flag and then run back to their group base. Lots of fun - especially in the dark!
