Castle Toward Outdoor Education Centre

Castle Toward and its grounds have a unique atmosphere, so you may not be surprised to learn that the popular CBBC programme ‘The Raven’ has been filmed here for the last few years. Sixty years and 300,000 people later, the castle (or ‘castellated mansion’ to be precise) which dates from 1820 has become something of a national treasure. Ask around. We guarantee you will know someone who has soaked in the Castle Toward magic or knows someone who has.

Surrounded by 150 acres of woodland (that’s over 80 Hampden Parks!) the castle sits on the southern tip of the Cowal Peninsula. Beaches and historic ruins are a stone’s throw away and from the castle grounds you can take in panoramic vistas of the Isles of Bute, Arran and Cumbrae. What a great place for young people to explore and ponder the wonders of nature in a tranquil and safe environment, well away from the madding crowd.

The diverse activities held at this residential school and outdoor education centre include art, music, drama, sports coaching, youth conferences and outdoor education courses.

Particularly impressive is Castle Toward’s White Room. It overlooks the sea, has to-die-for acoustics, Grade I listed Italian plasterwork and a south-facing location for hours of natural light, particularly during the summer months. This makes the White Room ideal for school orchestras, musicians, singers, actors, artists, group working and special occasions such as weddings and birthday parties.

Equally impressive is the beautiful Green Room. An annual venue for Glasgow Schools Symphony Orchestra since 1955, it is perfect for musicians, actors and artists.

If you can’t find your muse indoors then try our open-air locations - the Toward Castle ruins, the Chinese lakes, wooded areas, the nearby seashore, and mouth-watering views over the Clyde estuary. Creative inspiration is just a stroll away…
